In today’s complex world of medical care, there is a renewed need for a profession often overlooked by newcomers to the industry. Medical coders are employees who work to correct medical billing practices, research and plan for medical reimbursement, and work to maximize hospital facility efficiency. Many years ago, medical coders were rare because insurance was more simplistic. Because of modern problems like over-billing, insurance fraud, gaps in coverage, and incorrect billing practices, medical coders are today highly sought.

Proper medical coding training encompasses a variety of different areas. It has become an integral part of health care in this country, because proper billing and the coding of those bills is essential to medical financial sustainability. It was developed as a kind of common language between medical establishments, so proper reimbursement is given from governmental entities and medical insurance companies.
